Conservative investors who are not trying to knock the ball out of the park really like this trade. But what is their maximum potential upside?
There are two cases: (1) They sell an in-the-money call option against their stock, or (2) they sell an out-of-the-money call option against their stock. In the first case, the potential upside is zero. All they can do is earn the time premium portion of the option. In the second case, the potential upside goes right up to the strike price of the option they sold, and then no further. For example, if they sold a 50-strike option against a $42 stock then the potential upside is $8. That’s the best they can do. If the stock goes way above 50 (the strike price) then they will still only receive $50/share on expiration day.

Friday, December 2nd, 2011I wonder why he puts up with him. My friend’s roommate is a real piece of work. On his days off, I don’t even think he takes a shower. Ugh. You would think someone would clean up a little if they know company is coming over. His money management skills are an epic fail, too. My friend has to always bug him towards the end of the month for his share of the rent, yet the guy took out a 401k hardship loan so he could go to a comic book convention in another city. The best part was that was too dumb to know he had to pay penalties for the early withdrawal if he didn’t pay it back, and now the bank is ringing the phone nonstop. I hate to tell my friend I told him so, but I told him so. He’s trying to get him taken off the lease so he can have some peace. I wish him the best of luck.
